I am not completely sure on why you battery in your Mustang would be smoking only when connected to the starter. I would take into a shop and have them look at it.
Because there are two bolts fastening it to your bell housing.
What size engine? 302
Using the starter solenoid jump the small middle terminal with the starter terminal at the rear of the solenoid
The solinoid is located on the top of the starter. Generally the starter is located on the front of the car, or the left side of the engine, next to the transmission.
It would have a starter relay and it is located in the power distribution box under the hood. Remove the black plastic cover and turn the cover over, it will tell you which relay is for the starter.
The starter solenoid is attached to the starter. Follow the positive battery cable from the battery, it will lead you to the starter solenoid. The starter would have to be removed to replace the starter solenoid.
AnswerOn my 1992 DeVille 2 door , 4.9 L, FWD. The Starter is located center of engine block underneath manifold. Basically if you picture the oil fill cap position if it were located on the bottom of the blocl the starter would be just to the rightof it. I am replacing my tranny cooler, A/C condencer, and Radiator. Due to Mother not stopping for a deer.. and cleaning the connections to the starter while I have the extra elbow room. If your deville has "PFI" in red letters on the valve cover you have a 4.9 "B" motor and the starter is on the outside left front of the engine. You can see the starter from underneath between the radiator and the oil pan.
That would be inside the polar control unit
The starter is located at the front of the engine (front of the car). Look at the engine from underneath, just behind the radiator - follow the heavy gauge black wire to the starter itself.
The starter solenoid is located on the starter. It would be more cost-effective to have the entire starter replaced with a good remanufactured unit on this application.
Underneath you would have to get under the car
