Twins are caused on one of two conditions.

The first possibility is that two eggs were released from the mother and both were fertilized. The second possibility is that one egg was penetrated simultaneously by two sperm.

There are two types of twins, identical and fraternal. Identical twins come about by the splitting of a zygote (fertilised egg) at some stage. This is completely random and the incidence is the same in all races. My husband and his borther are identical twins. Fraternal twins are produced when two eggs are fertilised by two sperm in the same menstrual cyle. They may be of the same sex or opposite sexes and are no more alike that any other brothrs and sisters. Fraternal twins are more common in older, well-nourished, fertile women (or if two embryos are implanted after IVF) and vary between races. Some African peoples have a very high rate of fraternal twinning with far Eastern races having the lowest rate. Two of my children are fraternal twins. Photographs on my Bio page englishangel

Conjoined twins result when the zygote of identical twins fails to completely separate. That being said, identical twins occur when a single zygote, that is, a fertilized egg, divides into two separate embryos. The embryos will then, with all conditions met, develop into fetuses sharing the same womb. When the zygote doesn't fully separate, the embryos develop into fetuses without dissolving their connection.

Conjoined twins are always identical; fraternal (non-identical) twins are the result of two separate eggs being fertilized by two separate sperm and being so, avoid the incomplete division necessary to form conjoined twins.

Conjoined twins used to be called Siamese twins if that is what you mean. The politically correct term is now conjoined twins.

This is a splitting defect, in which a single fertilized egg or zygote starts to separate into two distinct individuals but does not complete the process.

What if your great grandma had twins and your dad is a twin will you have twins?

Most likely not, as it shows to skip a generation. It skipped your grandma, so by logic, the pattern is yes-no-yes-no. You would the the fourth no. It will also depend on which side of the family the twins were on. The propensity to have fraternal twins can be inherited as a female trait that causes more than one egg to be dropped at a time. Identical twins have no genetic relationship that has been found to date.
