∙ 12y agothoracic are the middle twelve vertebrae after the first seven cervical vertebrae. They do not have the transverse foramen of the cervical vertebrea. Thoracic vertebrae all articulate with ribs, therefore they have a transverse coastal facet for the tubercle of the rib. Lumbar vertebrae are the five massive ones above the sacrum. Note the word massive. They are thick and have stout spinous processes. Everything on them is thicker and stouter than any of the others. The lumbar vertebrae have triangular vertibral foramen, whereas thoracic have circular vertebral foramen and cervical have a large, almost trapazoidal triangular vertebral foramen. From a superior view, the transverse process of a thoracic points up at an acute angle to the spinous process and the transverse process of a thoracic is almost at a ninety degree angle to the spinous process. ∙ 11y agoLumbar vertebrae are bigger and more weight bearing than cervical vertebrae. They can be distinguished from cervical vertebrae because they do not have the foramen transversaruim within the transverse process. They also do not have facets on the sides of the body. Cervical vertebrae are immediately below the skull and support the neck. Cervical vertebrae also have a foramen in each transverse process, unlike thoracic and lumbar vertebrae.
