Mitosis is the only form of somatic reproduction; therefore the process of mitosis produces two genetically identical cells. So if a cell that has 16 chromosomes undergoes mitosis, each daughter cell would still have 16 chromosomes. In meiosis, however, germ cells are produced (such as the male sperm and female egg). They go through two divisions rather than just the one (as in mitosis), therefore only having half of the chromosomes. So when a cell undergoes meiosis, each cell would only have 8 chromosomes.
