The nucleus is where all the mass of the atom is to be found and every nucleus is made of Protons and Neutrons which have about the same mass. Together these therefore give the atom its Mass Number.

Thus if you know the Mass Number you know how many Protons and Neutrons the atom contains. If you are then told how many Neutrons there are, a simple subtraction of this number from the Mass Number will give you the number of Protons.

The number of Protons in an atom defines what is called its "Atomic Number" and this is unique to each element.

You can then look up the Atomic Number in a Periodic Table of the Elements and find out which element has that number.
