Water works just fine (hence the name "hydraulics"), but a light oil is more commonly used since it's less corrosive than water is, generally boils at a higher temperature (this is important in things like brake fluid), and also serves as a lubricant for any moving parts in the system.

The state of matter a material is most likely to resist compression is liquid. Liquids cannot be compressed and this is what supports hydraulics.
Lead CAN NOT be compressed, it doesn't flow, it has a high density and it always stays the same volume and shape. - A
Coal is dead and converted biomass. When living plants die and are quickly submerged in fresh water, decay cannot occur. Large quantities of biomass were thus layered and, over many thousands of years, compressed and changes to become coal. The material that coal started out as was living plant material.

No, liquid cannot be compressed because you use syringe put water and you use your hand block the hole you push you cannot push.
A solid has a fixed shape and volume and cannot be compressed
Yes, gold can be compressed if you compress it to 2 million atmosphere at room temperature.
Liquids are cannot be compressed because the particles are close together and compact- this means that the particles cannot get closer together. Therefore liquids can't be compressed.
solids cannot be compressed at all, if you compress a liquid enough it will become a solid by freezing, gasses can be compressed however if compressed enough it will become a liquid
definite shape,definite volume,cannot be compressed.
ductility It is strong and cannot be compressed.
