Cougar is the callsign of the top pilot in the squadron at the start of "Top Gun". When the flight is jumped by Russians, he is abandoned by his wingman, Maverick, and believes he is going to be shot down. He becomes catatonic at the controls and must be talked back to the carrier by Maverick.
