The umlaut characters are created on a computer by using ASCII key sequences.

Holding the "Alt" key down whilst typing in the code for the required character.

0196 Ä = AE (capital)

0228 ä = ae (small)

0203 Ë = EE (capital)

0235 ë = ee (small)

0214 Ö = OE (capital)

0246 ö = oe (small)

0220 Ü = UE (capital)

0252 ü = ue (small)

0223 ß = SS

0128 € = Euro sign

There is Font software freely available on the web which contains all the ASCII key codings

The letter i does not take umlaut, which is a particular kind of change in vowel pronunciation, sometimes indicated by a double dot above the letter. The double dot above a letter i or e is called a dieresis ( di-YER-ruhsis), and it means that the letter is to be pronounced separately from the preceding vowel, and not made into a diphthong with it. On a Mackintosh keyboard, use option (or alt) + u, then type the i or e.

Windows Machines

Ï - Hold down , press 0207 on the numpad, release

ï - Hold down , press 0239 on the numpad, release

Our keyborad is different from the one's used in England or the USA. Our keybord includes the letters ä ö and ü, so we don't have to do anything special. But I think there are certain shortcuts on winword as well to get the "umlaut".

One way to do this is to right-click on the language icon in the bottom right of your screen (should read EN for English) then go into settings. In general settings click add and it will then give you a list of all languages. Just select German and you can just change between languages by left clicking on the icon. The problem with this is that a number of German keys are different to the standard QWERTY keyboard, e.g z and y are swapped, Another way is to type out your text in MS-Word and use the symbols function.

Alt129 or Alt0220 will put this mark over the letter "U"... ü or Ü. This means to hold down the "Alt" key while typing the numbers on the number pad.

Search ASCII codes to find other accents and symbols.

It is not on the keyboard.

Go on Excel to top of page

and click on Insert

then Symbol

where the letter with umlaut already added can be found.

For example ...ä ë ï ö üÄ Ë Ï Ö Ü

and many other symbols are there.

Most special characters in Windows (any version, not just XP) are available in the Character Map application in the Accessories Menu.

Click Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then Character Map. Select the character you want. From there, you can COPY the character, and then PASTE it into your other application.

Notice the "Keystroke" command on the lower-right corner? You can type that character by holding down the ALT key and pressing this number ON THE NUMERIC KEYPAD. This DOES NOT WORK with the numbers on the top of the regular keyboard; you MUST use the NUMERIC KEYPAD. Laptop users without a number keypad; You may need to press the FN key to type numerals on the regular keyboard keys.

For example, pressing ALT and "0252" on the numeric keypad types a "u" with an umlaut. Like this: ü
