heck yes, you body burns alot of calories just to maintain normal body temperature, but i wouldn't recommend this as a way of losing weight. your body wors like a furnace, it needs fuel to keep burning. your body maintains its temp by burniing calories(fuel)

It depends on a whole lot of factors... such as how long it takes you, what stroke you use. I swim 1km three or four times a week - and it takes me about 25-30 minutes and I do mostly freestyle. I log my swims at a swimming for fitness website and it calculates roughly my calorie usage. For me, a 1km uses about 220-230 calories. If I combine it with a bike ride to and from the pool (4km total) it burns an extra 150 calories. Keep on swimming :)
