What is metabolism?...It is the sum of all biochemical processes in the body. This includes the production and maintainance of very complex organic molecules (anabolism), and the breakdown of these organic molecules (catabolism.) When the body is sick or physically stressed, there is a series of chemical reactions that produce much needed compounds, such as proteins, enzymes, and hormones. Here we have an increase in anabolism. The body, when in a state of illness, also needs certain molecules and compounds broken down to be used for resources, including a fuel supply of the immune system. This is an example of an increase in catabolism. Anyone with a fever shows an elevated body temperature. This should be followed with an elevated blood pressure as well. All these things (and these are only a select few examples) are evidence of an increase in the biochemical processes of the body, which is the same as an increase in body metabolism.
