Lightning can strike upwards, from the ground to the sky, and it can also strike downwards, from one cloud to another, or from one part of a cloud to another part. (see: http://www.answers.com/topic/lightning)

The cloud sends down electrons to the ground and when it finds a substance lightning can travel through than a discharge travels up to the cloud, the lightning. If you stand on rubber lightning wont discharge.

up to down when one channel of electrical charged air moves near an object a surge of electricity travels upward from the ground to the cloud and produces the visible lightning strike

Air-to-ground lighting forms by ionizing the air in a thundercloud. The ionized air begins to form downward branching conductive channels, called leaders, which follow the general direction of the electrostatic field between the cloud and the ground, but in an irregular path determined by the breakdown of the air. It can take a few hundred milliseconds for the leaders to approach the ground. When a leader gets close to the ground, conductive channels called streamers begin to form from objects on the ground, reaching upward to meet the leader. When one of the streamers connects to one of the leaders, the conductive path is complete and a massive current is suddenly released. Technically, this return stroke is a flow of electrons from the ground to the cloud. So, lightning forms from cloud to ground and then charged particles flow from ground to cloud.

Lightning actually strikes the ground, although some people have photos of the ground striking the lightning.
