In a stable atom, the amount of electrons will always match the number of protons because the atom must be neutral. In helium, the two protons are balanced with two electrons.

What follows won't help answer your question, but may help you better understand the atomic model. The superscript 4 is known as the Atomic Mass number of this particular element. In any element, it is the atomic mass number that describes how many protons and neutrons are present in an atom. We know that there are two protons in helium because of its atomic number, so it can be inferred that the two remaining particles are neutrons.

The number of protons is equal to the atomic number. For example hydrogen's atomic number is 1 therefore it has one proton in its nucleus. The amount of protons is always equal to the amount of protons in the atom if it's charge is neutral. For example hydrogen has 1 proton therefore it has 1 electron. To find the amount of neutrons you have to use the atomic mass. The atomic mass is the protons plus the neutrons.

To find the number of protons, electrons, and neutrons of an atom, you have to take the atomic number of the atom and subtract it from the atomic weight. If the atomic weight of the atom is a decimal, you should round it to the nearest tenth.

For Example:

Atom: Sulfur

Atomic Number: 16

Atomic Weight: 32.07

Round the Atomic Weight ( 32.07) to the nearest tenth (32).

Take 32 and subtract it from 16 and you will get 16.

So, the protons, neutrons, and electrons for Sulfur is...

Protons: 16

Neutrons: 16

Electrons: 16

It's all on the periodic table. The number of electrons and protons of an atom is equal to its atomic number. (Potassium is #19, so it has 19 electrons and protons). The number of neutrons is the atomic mass minus the atomic number. (For potassium, 39 - 19 = 20, so it has 20 neutrons).

The first thing you will need to do is find some information about your element. Go to the Periodic Table of Elements and click on your element. Use the Table of Elements to find your element's atomic number and atomic weight. The atomic numberis the number located in the upper left corner and the atomic weight is the number located on the bottom. The atomic number is the number of protons in an atom of an element. By definition, atoms have no overall electrical charge. That means that there must be a balance between the positively charged protons and the negatively charged electrons. Atoms must have equal number of protons and electrons. To find the number of neutrons you must find is something called the mass number. Unfortunately, the mass number isn't listed on the Table of Elements. To find the mass number, all you need to do is round the atomic weight to the nearest whole number. But just remember:

For any element:

Number of Protons = Atomic Number

Number of Electrons = Number of Protons = Atomic Number

Number of Neutrons = Mass Number - Atomic Number
