Combustion produces excessive Carbon Dioxide, causing pollution in locations that are densely populated with fossil fuel energy dependent people. In addition, Fossil Fuel is for the most part nonrenewable. What takes millions of years to form is expended by human beings in a few hundred years, so it will push us to seek newer, more efficient means of energy production, or it may simply motivate us to synthesize fossil fuels. I must hope it is the former.

Burning fossil fuel is a fairly cheap and easy way to generate electricity and power our vehicles, so we have used it lavishly over the years.

We are now realizing the problem of all the carbon dioxide it adds to the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This carbon used to be safely stored underground, but letting it loose now has disturbed the normal carbon cycle and the world is getting warmer.

Fossil fuel is coal, oil and natural gas that was laid down millions of years ago from the carbon of trees, vegetation and even animals. When man digs it up and uses it for energy (by combustion, or burning), this extra carbon is released into the environment, where it is accelerating the greenhouse effect. This accelerated, or enhanced, or runaway greenhouse effectis now causing global warming.

The normal carbon cycle is a natural process whereby carbon moves in and out of the atmosphere, from the soil, oceans, animals and vegetation. It supports the greenhouse effect, where greenhouse gases have kept the earth comfortably warm since life began.

How is Oil a fossil fuels?

The definition of a fossil fuel is fuel consisting of the remains of organisms preserved in rocks in the earth's crust with high carbon and hydrogen content. Oil is actually being debated as to whether or not it is a fossil fuel. Most scientists support that it is a fossil fuel and we need to conserve it.

Is geothermal not a fossil fuel or is it a fossil fuel?

Geothermal energy is not a fossil fuel, because it is harnessing energy from the thermal heat energy within the earth and is not dependent upon decomposed ancient plants and animals, which is what coal, oil, and natural gas are, which is why they are called "fossil fuels."
