Electricity. That is the basis for how a generator works. When a coil of wire passes though a magnetic field, or a magnetic field through a coil of wire, electricity is produced. Taken in reverse, if you apply electricity to a coil of wire, magnetism is produced, and that is the basis for how a motor works.
