Boards evaluate physician candidates on several fronts, asking questions such as: Has the candidate completed the appropriate residency requirements? Does he or she have an institutional or valid license to practice medicine? If a physician meets these basic admission standards, the Member Board will evaluate the candidate using written and oral examinations. Because specialties differ so widely, the criteria that inform these tests are quite different. What makes someone a good anesthesiologist does not necessarily make him or her a competent cardiologist.
All doctors need to attend 4 years of med school. Then in residency, doctors choose what they want to practice. Surgeons complete a general surgery residency which is around 3-4 years. Other surgical specialties require different residency programs. For instance, neurosurgeons have to take one year of general surgery and then 5-7 years of neurosurgery residency.
Well, usually 4 years of undergrad 4 years of medical school 5 years of residency for general surgury and 2-3 years extra (fellowship) if you want to specialize. So its about 15-18 years. Good Luck!!! To have accurate answer; FIRST What type surgeon (i mean general surgeon or specified like plastic surgeon, Orthopedic.,.... ) SECOND Region or area the surgeon will practie his job THIRD facilities for training like teachers, equbmints & The numbers and type of diseases treat in training center. until of questions above...... the average to be surgeon are 3 to 6 years. Dr Sam
First, one must complete a Bachelor's degree (typically 4 years) at an undergraduate university. Then, the student must apply to and be admitted to a medical school. Medical school takes 4 years to complete; the first 2 years are completed in the classroom and the second 2 years are completed via clinical clerkships in the hospital. Next the student (usually) must complete 5 years of general surgery residency training. At this point in the game, the resident is a licensed Doctor and is paid an annual salary, although it is a very meager salary relative to the number of hours worked (average $45,000/year; work 80 hours per week). After residency, one can choose to complete a 1-3 year fellowship to sub-specialize. So, the minimum number of years it takes to become a surgeon is 4 undergrad yrs + 4 medical school yrs +5 general residency years= 13 years.
There are a few exceptions. Some surgical subspecialties have their own program tracks, so that the student does not take the 5-year general surgery track. Instead, neurosurgery, urology, orthopedics, and ophthalmology have their own educational timelines. Another exception is Plastic and Reconstructive surgery. There are various integrated programs that allow the resident to complete 2 years general surgery and then go directly into studying Plastics. So, in the last case, it would take 6 years to become a Plastic Surgeon, although a doctor can always choose to further sub-specialize and add on additional numbers of years for that training.
Surgeons don't train in medical schools!
To become a surgeon you first attend medical school (4 years) to earn a medical degree; after that you train as a surgeon via an appropriate internship (1 year, including completion of basic medical licence exams & competency assessments), & then surgical residency (typically 5 years) - usually in a teaching hospital.
Surgical Residents are not medical students; they're licenced doctors undergoing specialty training who assume increasing responsibilities for patient care (albeit under supervision) as their competencies & confidence develop. Successful completion of Residency requirements earns Surgical Board Certification.
Many newly qualified surgeons also undertake a few years of research or further post qualification training (often Fellowships abroad, or in a very different hospital environment from that in which residency was undertaken; or possibly in a sub-specialty - eg hand surgery) to broaden their experience/ perspectives before assuming permanent attending surgeon positions.
All good surgeons continually review their practice; engage in ongoing/ continual skills revision/ upgrading ("refresher" courses; courses in new techniques/ applications of technologies etc), & attend professional conferences/ symposia. Practicing surgeons have to recertify every 10 years. In short, "lifelong learning" & continual professional development are the sine qua non of good surgical practice, & in a sense surgical training never really ends!
It would take four years for The Bachelor's degree with completion of all prerequisite coursework required by medical schools and four years of medical school. Thus, eight years beyond high school completion. While many individuals who pursue a career as a physician major in Biology at the undergraduate level, many others come from a variety of other educational backgrounds. The best major to take should be based on a contingency plan. In other words, what happens if you do not go to medical school? What will you be able to do with the degree that you have, and will it provide you with a satisfying career or career path? You should meet with a career counselor at the college or university you attend for what options exist for you. The important issue is acquiring the appropriate prerequisites required for medical school. The student should have a strong background in the following areas.
Following the bachelor's degree, would be four years of medical school to obtain the MD or DO degree. There will also be an additional three or more years to complete the internship and residency requirements depending on the specialty.

Get a four-year college degree, go to medical school for three years, then specialize in surgery with further study.
