There are 100 cents in a dollar. There are 400 cents in 4 dollars. There are 450 cents in 4 dollars and fifty cents. One third means to divide it into 3 equal parts 100 + 100 + 100 + 100 + 50. If you take 3 lots of 100 you still have 100 + 50 cents left Another way to write 100 + 50 is 50 + 50 + 50. Therefore (100 + 50) + (100 + 50 ) + (100 + 50) = 450 cents or $4.50 So one third of $4.50 is 150 cents or $1.50
Use this format for the 'cents' portion: 50/100 (this example is 50 cents). If there is no cents amount, for example $150.00, then then cents would be written as 00/100The full amount of $150.00 would be written as: One hundred fifty and 00/100
