AM = abbreviation for the Latin words "ante meridiem" (between midnight and noon)

PM = abbreviation for the Latin words "post meridiem" (between noon and midnight)

This is why A.M. is 12:00 midnight to 11:59 in the morning, and P.M. is 12:00 noon (i.e. the middle of the day) to 11:59 in the evening.

The full form of AM is Ante Meridiem which means before midday or before noon and the full form of PM is Post Meridiem which in essence means after midday meaning between noon and midnight.
