A young girl named Coraline moves into a house with her parents. Her two parents don't pay much attention to her because they are too caught up with their work. Coraline discovers a small door in the house that leads to a world where everything in her life is better. Her "Other mother" and "Otherfather"(people who look exaclty like her parents, but only buttons replaced for eyes) pay attention to her and theres a beautiful garden outside her house and stuff. The "other mother" (Beldam) (meaning "Witch" or "Hag")says that Coraline can stay there, if she lets her take out her eyes and sew buttons there in their place. Coraline refuses, and the Beldam working even harder to try to steal her soul. To find out the rest you're going to have to go and see it!

The moral of Coraline is to always be thankful for what you have because you could have it worse. And to remember that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Don't judge a book by its' cover.

My interpretation of Coraline comes from living in this world. Here things are not what they seem and the truth about life is upside down to the way we intuitively understand it.

Coraline is a child, naïve and trusting. She wants the creature comforts we all want. She is humanity-humanity that all too often doesn't analyze the safe-haven offers from the Other Mother before making decisions. Life is not easy for any of us. There are many hard lessons for all of us to learn.

Consequently the offers of the Other Mothers in the spiritual and physical world for an easy life with no cares are tempting. But they are like the Ring of power in Lord of the Rings: they come at a price, a high price.

The doll represents those familiar, comforting, safe feeling things in our lives that are twisted and used by the Other Mother (those who wish to control our lives or our souls) to deceive and destroy us. We wouldn't believe a full out lie but we are duped by the truth with just enough lie in it to confuse us.

And so the Other Mother weaves a beautiful world of comfort around us. It is a world without care or worry about even the true dangers around us. And there are dangers. With all the attention on the Turkish Delight, we don't notice that there is nothing in this fantasy world beyond the garden. So we sell our soul for a mirage.

And what of buttons instead of eyes? Eyes represent insight and independent thinking. Consequently, the Other Mother binds us to her by blinding us, limiting our vision. In this way she controls us. Since the beginning of time, governments and churches have used Propaganda: buttons that indoctrinate and brainwash. The Other Mother ensures that we are blinded, uneducated, and completely disabled, taking our lives and our souls in this way.

But there are some, like the cat, that resist the Other Mother. They are independent thinkers that hold fast to the truth and have the wisdom to see through the lies, holding fast to reality even in her world. There have always been those that warn of danger and give instruction to others so they also can resist and escape.

The theme of Coraline varies with how people perceive it. My perception was that the theme is:

"Things aren't always as they seem."

Hope this helped!
