The canteen had to get the troops from one campsite to the next. The trip to the nearest creek, river or stream was a part of the routine for soldiers. Tea and coffee were precious products since both had to be imported and with the South blockaded that war nearly impossible, Johnny Reb and Billy Yank often had informal truces to trade coffee or tea for smoking tobacco. When the trading was over, a shot in the air, a two minute pause, and the war resumed.

There were no Cokes, Coors, Kool Aid or other goodies available and certainly no ice available to chill it down.
