This is a very bad problem, as you seem to have experienced. Instead of pulling back on the reins, take just one rein and pull on it to make the horse turn around. If he starts speeding up, catch him before he is running, and make him go the other way by pulling on one rein.

In addition, take some time with your horse if they like to race back to the barn. Each time he decides to race back, turn him in the opposite direction and work him. Ask for figure 8's, side passes, back ups...anything that will get him to realize that if he wants to rush back, he will be put to work. Don't ever let your horse run back to the barn if you can avoid it. It sends a bad message.

I do this with my horse when he tries to eat while trail riding and he has stopped nibbling completely.

Is there something that prevents a horse from trying to graze while you are riding?

Yes there is! At my riding school we call them daisy reins or grass reins. Basically its a leather strap that goes on a Dee ring of the saddle and then buckles around the headpiece of the bridle. This means your horse cannot reach down to the grass to eat.Hope this helps :)

Why is a bit and briddle used in horses?

The bit on the bridle of a horse, is attached to the reins. The rider holds the reins and thus can control the horse. For example if you pull on the reins, the horse slows down or stops, because of the pressure that is placed on the horse's mouth. Likewise if you pull to the left or right with the rein (this is in English riding) the horse will turn in the direction you are pulling.

How do you do a half halt in horse riding?

To perform a half halt in horse riding, close your fingers on the reins to create a steady, restraining contact with the horse's mouth while simultaneously applying pressure with your seat and legs to slow down or rebalance the horse. This helps communicate to the horse to prepare for a change in speed, gait, or direction.

Why are reins important to use when riding a horse?

When mounted on a horse the rider controls the horse by natural aids such as gentle pressure of the legs and feet. The reins are an artificial aid and are connected to the bit within the horse's mouth. This allows further communication with the horse in order to maintain control.

How do you gather reigns when you are riding a horse?

to gather the reins, you take the reins in one hand and grab lower with the other hand, do this with both hands until you have collected your reins to a good length. do not just wiggle the reins through your fingers to shorten them, this is incorrect.
