Online Colleges?

Full time jobs, families, long commutes, and overall inconvenience are just a few of the reasons more and more students are turning to online colleges. With millions enrolling, e-learning has been pushed to the forefront of education debates.CNN and the New York Times are just two of many reporting on the popularity of online colleges.Though there is debate about the perception of online colleges, there are many options with the same regional accreditation as brick-and-mortar colleges, with Jones-International University as the first to receive such accreditation. Now some online colleges meet not only in online discussion groups but conduct courses in 3-D virtual classrooms using programs such as Second Life to close the gap between online education and face-to-face learning environments. With traditional colleges increasingly offering their own version of online classes and with the ubiquity of technology in the work place as well as daily life, online colleges and university seem to be a natural progression. Online colleges like the University of Phoenix advertise small classes, experienced instructors, accelerated programs, and a “real-world education.”It is no wonder that traditionally face-to-face colleges and university are branching out onto the Internet.Online colleges cater to the needs of off-campus students, while traditional colleges generally marginalize this minority of students in favor of traditional 18 to 21 year-old students, many of who commute to class from a campus dorm room.As the popularity of online colleges increase and the perception of degrees from online college rise as well, even traditional students may begin to consider the benefits of shortening that commute even further by taking classes at their bedroom desktop. According to the United States Distance Learning Association, 9 percent of four-year public schools and over 5 percent of private schools provide online coursework. It is clear that even traditional colleges are aware of the value of distance learning and online colleges. From a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design to a Ph.D. in Psychology, online colleges have opened up the world of higher education to students across the nation.
