In child abuse OR corporal punishment, "50 licks" or "50 hits" from any object (including a hand) would be equally bad because a child or teen immediately feels indignant about the sub-standard treatment received... even if the child did something wrong. Humans feel indignant when treated unfairly. Hitting violates personal space and the physical boundary each person has 'around' them. The embarrassment and indignity causes emotional pain that often takes decades to work through as an adult. Adults hit as children are more likely to be victimized in domestic violence as adults: violence breeds violence.
