Unfortunately when you have to tell someone something that you already know is going to hurt them there is not way to get around that however, the best thing to do is be straight forward, honest and polite. Don't tell them what you think they want to hear or something that you don't really mean just to smooth it over - tell them the truth. Treat others the way you would like to be treated and honesty is always the best policy.
