Gatsby throws extravagant parties all year in the hopes that Daisy will attend one and he can reunite with her. Additionally, the parties serve as a distraction for Gatsby, allowing him to fill his empty life with superficial socializing.

Gatsby met Daisy five years previous whilst training for the infantry. He mentions that he left home at 17 to join the infantry, so I would assume he met Daisy at about 17, in 1917. So he would be twenty two in 1922, the year that he he died.
Gatsby doesn't drain his swimming pool because it represents his hope and longing for a reunion with Daisy. He believes that one day Daisy will come back to him, and he wants everything to be ready for her, including the pool that he had built for her. Draining the pool would symbolize giving up on his dream of being with Daisy.

it says on page 81 of the book that they were married in june, and before that it mentions the date 1917. however, if you read further it says "next autumn" so it is only an extimate, so they either got married: June, 1918 or June, 1919
At the end of "The Great Gatsby," Gatsby is shot and killed by George Wilson, who believes Gatsby is responsible for the death of his wife, Myrtle. Gatsby dies alone in his swimming pool, with no one but Nick Carraway present.
