People who have answered this question in the past have disagreed with each other (see below for the debate).

Ultimately, watermelon rinds are not overly dangerous for rabbits, but they have no nutritional value, either. When a food has no nutritional value, you should either eliminate it entirely from the diet or restrict it to the occasional treat. If your rabbit eats too much of any food, no matter what it is, then it could spoil its appetite for hay -- and rabbits should eat lots and lots of hay every day, otherwise they'll get sick.

Debate:

  • Yes, & don't worry about rabbits eating the wrong foods. Rabbits have such a mind that they will avoid foods they know are poisonous.
  • Actually, you can't trust pets to avoid dangerous foods. Pets have been domesticated, which means they rely on humans to take care of them now. Animals lose a lot of their wild instincts when they are domesticated. Many, many, many pet rabbits have died from eating dangerous foods!
  • Maybe you should check out a rabbit book at a library!
  • No, it's not good for their digestive system. It's hard to digest and will give your rabbit diarrhea. However, rabbits can chew on them! They are really good at waring down teeth. Just make sure they don't swallow them!

Is watermelon rind healthy for rabbits?

No, watermelon (rind and fruit) isn't healthy for rabbits. It's too high in sugar (even the rind), and not high enough in healthy nutrients. Sometimes watermelon is good, sometimes it is okay. Watermelon is a treat. Treats (like fresh fruits, carrot) should be limited to a bite every couple of days (assuming your rabbit can handle them and doesn't get diarrhea; and otherwise is eating a healthy diet). Watermelon is an especially sugary treat so it should be especially limited. Rabbits eat a diet mostly of hay. They also eat some high quality pellets, and should have access to fresh water. Fresh greens can become a part of your rabbit's diet slowly (too much too quickly can result in digestive problems). See the related question about the rabbit diet below.
