Time magazine had a good article about just this subject a few months back. The argument being between organic versus local. Sometimes we think we're doing a good thing by buying eating organic foods but we don't think about how far that food had to travel to get to us and how fresh it might actually be.

The term organic is a muddy one. The government doesn't regulate organic food the same way it does meats, for instance with quality checks and labeling.

These days your best bet for truly organic and fresh food is to grow it yourself or to support a local cooperative or farm.

That's the only people that derive any benefit from us eating "organic" food. It costs more for us to buy, and it is not as healthy as conventionally-grown food. The 2006 outbreak of E coli, which killed 3 people and made hundreds ill, was caused by manure contamination of "organic" spinach. By contrast, there has never been a single reported case of human death due to consumption of pesticide residues on retail food products. "Organic" growers benefit because they are selling their poisonous crap at a premium over conventionally-grown, HEALTHY food. But then, I can't say I blame them, if people are stupid enough to BUY the crap and EAT it.

Organic food does not permit the use of synthetic pesticides. It does not allow genetically modified organisms (gmo) sometimes referred to as genetically modified food. Further, organic food is not permitted to use irradiation. All of these techniques have been linked to long time development of cancer and other diseases in human and animals. When you eat organic food, you stay away from all of these chemicals.

The methods use to grow and handle organic food ensure minimal environmental effect. These growing methods help to maintain nutrient rich soil for plants, which produce healthy plants.

Healthy plants are rich in nutrients. So, one could argue that organic food is better for us. However, both the US and Canadian governments maintain on their websites that organic food is no more nutritious than non-organic.

Conventionally produced foods tend to be picked before they are ripe, processed, and stored for long times. All three ways of handling food involve chemical treatments. To ripen early picked food, chemicals are used. To give the food an attractive color, chemicals are used. To form the food in attractive shapes, such as in the case of grapes, chemicals are used. In the latter case, commercial fertilizers add water weight.

Generally, the skins of conventionally produced foods have pesticide residue. The general thought is that a simple wash with water doesn't take it all off. Organically grown foods don't bring along any of this previously listed baggage. As one example, their skins can be eaten. As a result, the consumption is more nutritious what with the extra minerals and vitamins.

Organically grown food also should have higher levels of phytonutrients. These include the beloved antioxidants, which are a natural part of plant defense. In contrast, conventionally grown foods will have lower levels. Specifically, they don't take advantage of the natural defenses of plants. Instead, they rely on outside controls, through synthetic pesticides.

Nor does organic production allow the heavy processing of conventional methods. Specifically, it therefore avoids artificial sweeteners, colorings and flavorings; hydrogenated fats; phosphoric acid; and the range of preservatives. The bottom line in organic foods is the avoidance of toxins; and the selection of more minerals, phytonutrients and vitamins.

Organic foods are not grown using synthetic pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers, etc. They cannot contain GMOs. Processed organic foods cannot contain non-organic ingredients. Many believe organic foods are healthier than non-organic for those reasons.

Through my organic journey, I come across a lot of people asking me - isn’t organic the same as conventional food? Isn’t it more expensive? These are some of the biggest misconceptions even I had, but after trying organic for a couple of months, I can certainly tell you all one thing - organic food is good for health, and for the pocket too.

Organic food isn’t the same as conventional food. It is cleaner, greener, and healthier. There are no preservatives, additives or chemicals mixed in them, making them completely natural and full of nutrients, unlike conventional foods. And when it comes to the price point, organic food is slightly costlier when compared to conventional food, however, it is also competitively priced when it comes to other organic food options in the market. Organic Tattva is one such brand that produces pure organic products at reasonable prices. So, you can make the switch, without making a hole in your pocket.
