Clarence Thomas is only the second African-American to sit on the Supreme Court. He was nominated by George H. W. Bush to replace the retiring Thurgood Marshall (the first African-American Justice) in 1991.
Thomas was made infamous during the Senate confirmation hearing, lead by Republican-turned-Democrat Senator Arlen Specter, when a former employee, lawyer Anita Hill, accused him of sexual harassment. No legal action was taken against Thomas due to lack of convincing evidence, but the Senate Judiciary Committee was split 7-7 in their opinion and sent his nomination to the Senate Floor without recommendation.
Thomas is considered to be one of the most conservative Justices in the history of the Court.
