Commanding officers wear red along with pilots and navigation. Yellow is worn by people in ship operations (ex: security and engineering). Blue was worn by science and medical departments.

In early Star Trek episodes, yellow and red were switched around.

Red is for command, pilots and navigators. Teal is for medical and science, and gold is for Security, engineering and operations officers.

The same is true on Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, but for original series and Enterprise, red is for security and engineering, and gold is for command, helmsmen and navigators.

The metal pips on their collar signifies rank. Since Chakotay and Torres are officers with provisional status due to their Maquis beginnings, they have a different metal bar on their collars, but means the same thing as regular rank pips.

On original series, rank is shown by a stripe pattern on their sleeves.

Star Trek - Original Series (1966-1969)

* Gold / Beige - Command (bridge crew)

* Blue - Science and Medical

* Red - Engineering and Security (Ship's Services)

The actual color of the Gold uniforms, as originally filmed, was greenish-yellow (chartreuse) but appeared more yellow-gold due to the lighting used. The dress uniforms (and the Kirk wrap-over) had a truer green look due to their material.

Star Trek the Next Generation (1987-1994)

* Red - Command department - command, control and communications officers

* Gold (Mustard) - Operations department - engineering and security

* Blue - Sciences department - Science and medical personnel
