The difference is that environmental science is just one of the many branches, or sub-categories of science. Think of science as the tree and one of its major branches is Earth Sciences, and branching from that, environmental science.

Often, people use the term ecology to refer to the pure science of the environment, while environmental science usually involves the interface between ecological science and the human world, particularly in terms of public policy, natural resource economics, etc. So you can think of ecology as the study of relationships among living things and between living things and non-living things in their environment, and environmental science as the study of how people relate to the natural world, in the broadest sense.

Why is ecology connected to biology?

Ecology is just a branch of Biology that deals with interactions between organisms and their environment. Biology is sometimes called the "study of life" - which is an incrediblyall-encompassing topic. Therefore, Biology is separated into different parts-- or branches-- in which life is studied in different areas. Ecology happens to deal with life in its respective environment and its effects. It too is a relatively general subject, with sub-branches of its own.

What is the importance of studying ecology?

The alive beings are in permanent interaction between each other and with the environment in which they live. The ecology analyzes how each element of an ecosystem affects the other components and how this is affected too. It is a synthesis science, because to understand the complex plot of relations that exist in an ecosystem it takes knowledge from botany, zoology, physiology, genetics and other disciplines like the physics, chemistry and geology...

What are the relevance and relationship of ecology to other fields?

in ecology, we do not only deal with plants and animals and their relationship. we also deal with people - their economics, poltics, culture, and social life. this is what makes ecology a multidisciplinary science. ecology borrows from other fields of study. for instance, it utilizes mathematical tools in its quantitative analysis of pollution.
