We are looking for the possible blood types of the PARENTS.

Available information:

  • Baby is Type O = can only be OO
  • Father MUST contribute one O gene
  • Mother MUST contribute one O gene
Baby receives one gene from each parent:
  • Mom type AO + Dad type AO = Baby type OO, AO, AA
  • Mom type AO + Dad type BO = Baby type OO, AB, AO, BO
  • Mom type AO + Dad type OO = Baby type OO, AO
  • Mom type BO + Dad type BO = Baby type OO, BB, BO
  • Mom type BO + Dad type OO = Baby type OO, BO
  • Mom type OO + Dad type OO = Baby type OO
Generally as long as both parents contribute the O gene the baby will be Type O.

HOWEVER: There is more to ABO blood typing that just the ABO gene.

There is also an inhibitory gene that will change any genotype into the phenotype O.

Therefore a person with genetically AB blood can be tested as having Type O.

If the baby's inhibitory gene has been turned "on", then no matter what ABO genes he receives from his parents, he will test out as a Type O.

Blood types A and B are more dominant than O. It is more likely that a baby born to parents who are type A and type O will have type A blood because type A is more dominant.

No - children do not have to have the same blood type as the parents. For example, if one parent has blood type A and the other has blood type AB, the child might have A, B or AB blood types. (For the child to have B, the parent with blood type A would need to be heterozygous, Ao)

Does your ethnicity affect your blood type?

You get your blood type (phenotype) from your parents, each of whom carry their parents blood types (genotype) in their blood. Your ethnicity plays a minor factor because some races tend toward different blood types, but any member of any race can end up with any blood type. Four children of the same parents could all have the different types of blood.
