Not as many kids as used to have them removed; there are now conflicting ideas on whether or not it is good, medically, to remove tonsils, compared to a few decades ago when tonsils were sometimes routinely removed in all children who had chronic strep throat or had chronically inflamed tonsils.

Online, at ENT.org, a website for Ear, Nose and Throat surgeons, I found sources citing 1 million tonsillectomies performed in the US per year in the 1970s, reduced to to just under 250,000 such surgeries performed in the US, in the 2000s.
