Why is your son spitting up blood?

Call for medical assistance now. It could be:

• Bleeding ulcer in the stomach, first part of the small intestine, or esophagus
• Bleeding esophageal varices or stomach varices
• Defects in the blood vessels of the GI tract
• Infection of the stomach and intestines (gastroenteritis)
• Inflammation of the esophagus lining (esophagitis)
• Inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis)
• Irritation or erosion of the lining of the esophagus or stomach
• Swallowing blood (for example, swallowed after a nosebleed)
• Tumors of the stomach or esophagus

A little blood in the vomit is usually nothing to worry about, as the vomiting can cause breakages in the blood vessels lining the esophagus. The blood may also be from a small cut in the mouth or perhaps a nosebleed. Call a doctor ir your toddler continues to have blood in his vomit or the amount increases. If the blood resembles dark coffee grounds, take your toddler to the emergency room (bring a sample of the blood with you for the doctors).
