Society does not have a role. It has a structure. Rome's social structure changed during the Roman Republic. In the Early Republic the state was monopolised by the patricians (the aristocracy). The rich plebeians (commoners) fought for 200 years to obtain power-sharing with the patricians. They succeeded. They were then given equite (equestrian, cavalrymen) status. This was the second highest rank in Roman society. It was a bit like a lower tier of the aristocracy.
With imperial expansion, the rich became richer. The patricians were also owners of large landed estates. They expanded their holdings with the use of an abundant supply of slave labour which was created by Rome's wars of expansion (slaves were war captives). They did so at the expense of small peasant farmers. The equites became a richer and richer entrepreneurial class of bankers, money lenders, merchants, and investors in shipping and mining. The poor, instead, became poorer. Many dispossessed peasants flocked to Rome to eke out living there. They swelled the masses of the poor in the city. Poverty became a political hot potato, which was one of the causes of the civil wars which led to the fall of the Republic.
