It helped in that the caravel (as it was called) was the first ship designed (some 40 years earlier) specifically for long open water voyages.For other discoverers, finding their way to the south of Africa, the caravel had the added great advantage that you could also easily sail it up rivers, which greatly facilitated getting food and fresh water. On the open ocean, its rigging made it faster than earlier ships if you had the wind blowing from behind.
