Since sugar was very rare and expensive, most of the foodstuffs that we now consider desserts did not exist. Medieval people did however know and eat fruit and cheeses, which today are considered desserts.

But in medieval times - and even until well into the 19th century - people did not have desserts as such: all the food was brought to the table more or less simultaneously, and you chose what you fancied or what was brought to you.
