Vietnam is a war that had been going on long before the US ever got involved. In WWII France controlled parts of Indochina (including Vietnam). Seeing as France lost everything because of Germany, they had to give up control of Vietnam. In the 1950s, France tried to regain control of Vietnam but was failing. The United States, in an attempt to keep communism from dominating the area, supported several leaders of Vietnam. Eventually with the Tonkin Gulf Affair and other such problems (whether they actually happened or not) the United states started sending advisor's into Vietnam. This was in the early 1960s and was also the cause for the creation for the US Army Special Forces Green Berets. After a long period of pushing "military advisor's" into the country, LBJ started sending mass amounts of troops to Vietnam and then the war began.

What led up to the Vietnam war?

The Cold War. The Cold War did not necessarily involve any direct attacks, however. It was mainly between America and Russia in the 60's and 70's. Russia wanted to spread communism, but America didn't. Eventually Russia tried to spread it in Vietnam. The North Vietnamese approved, the South didn't. China was already communist, so they pitched in to help North Vietnam and Russia.
