Feet, hands, arms...some early measurements were actually based on the average size of certain body parts, such as the biblical "cubit" which was supposed to be the length of the lower part of the arm. Another example is how horses are still measured to this day, by "hands."
The human body was probably the first measurement tool and we still use some of those to this day: a perfect example is the "foot" which is used in what is called the "English" (as opposed to the 'metric') system of measurements. As you can imagine, a 'foot' varies with the size of a person, but it has been standardized to be 12 inches. And the "inch" came from the size of the thumb, from the tip of the thumb to its joint: bend the end-joint of your thumb and compare it to an inch on a ruler. In The Bible, they talk about the "cubit" as a measurement: the 'cubit' was the distance from the elbow joint to the wrist (about a 'foot' as you can see). And the "hand" is still used to measure the height of a horse, as in "the Appaloosa stood 11 hands high (at the shoulder)." Turn your hand sideways so that your figures are horizontal and 'stacked up' one on top of the other... that's about 4 inches. A "stride" is how long one step is measured...how much distance between your feet when you take one step while walking; it's generally considered to be 30 inches.
