The colonists [ union ] promised them their freedom if they fought, but what happened when the war was won by our disloyal, pathetic forefathers? Some were granted their freedom, but others were put them straight back in chains.

The British also promised them freedom if they fought for the redcoats- around 20,000 of them did and they were given the choice when the British lost the war of sticking it out in the colonies or sailing with the redcoats to Britain as free men. Unsurprisingly, many chose the second option.
