The British press is controlled by a rather small number of extremely large multinational companies including Rupert Murdoch's News International. This means that the press is formally free from government influence. However dependence on multinationals also means that journalists and editors may feel under direct or indirect pressure to censor stories which are critical of these multinationals or which contradict the ideology of the owners of these huge corporations.
