Why did Nazi Germany sign the non-aggression pact with Soviet Russia?

Germany and Russia signed a nonaggression pact in 1939 in order that they might safely partition Poland. They had done the same thing on 3 previous occasions (1792, 93, 95).

In 1934 Stalin joined the League hoping the league would guarantee his security against a threat from Germany. Stalin lost hope once he saw the failures of the League in such cases as the Rhineland re-militarization. Stalin had signed a treaty with France that meant that France would aid The USSR if Germany attacked.

Stalin became angry as he was not invited to the Stresa Conference, April 1935, and the Munich Conference, September 1938 this was Britain and Frances fault as they should have invited Stalin and begin to form relations with The Soviet Union so that they would have had a united front against Hitler.

Soon Ribbentrop the German foreign minister and Molotov* began to have words. They then signed the Nazi-Soviet Pact, however the Allies should have flown into Moscow to form an alliance. Finally on the 24th of August Stalin agreed and signed the pact and agreed that they wouldn't fight and secretly agreed to divide up Poland.

STALIN'S REASONS

1.Stalin wasn't really convinced that Britain and France would be strong to stop Hitler as he had witnessed their failures in the League.

2.He wanted part of Poland as it had once belonged to one of the great Tsars of Russia

There are two schools of thought. One holds that Stalin was buying time, because he knew the Red Army was not yet ready to fight the Nazis. The other is that Hitler and Stalin became enthusiastic partners, which seems borne out by the facts. Stalin invaded Poland from the east two weeks after Hitler invaded Poland from the west. They divvied up Poland between them, down the middle. Nobody declared war on the Soviet Union over this, because they had already declared war on Germany and had all they could handle there, and they'd have to fight their way through Germany just to get at the Russians, and there would be time enough to worry about what to do after that was accomplished. There were a number of secret protocols which were not made public as part of the non-aggression pact, among them this plan to rip Poland in two. In the next two years Hitler invaded eight countries and Stalin invaded five, but Hitler was much more successful. Stalin had murdered most of his best army officers in the Great Purge of the late 30s, which severely hampered the Russian efforts.

Some people will say Stalin just signed that pact to reduce suspicion so he could invade later, but i would disagree because in 1941 when Hitler invaded the USSR Stalin thought it couldn't happen so he didnt mobilize troops immediatly thus making World War 2 longer.

In WWI Germany had battles on both the Western and Eastern front. By creating a pact with USSR he was hoping to eliminate the battles of the eastern front, so he could focus entirely on the Western front.

Hence, Hitler wanted to avoid a big war with the USSR, so he made an agreement with the USSR about taking over Poland. that it would be divided between them and no one would invade the other.
