Americans who were still loyal to the British Crown or opposed universal democracy, called the Loyalists, immigrated to Canada where Britain was still in control. They generally immigrated from New York to Ontario (Upper Canada) or from New England to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
After the conclusion of the American Revolution, the number of British residents in Canada did in fact grow measurably. The main reason is that a number of Loyalist colonists, remaining true to the British Crown despite the Patriot victory in the Revolution, packed up and moved north in order to live on British soil rather than remain in "rebel" land.
