Ultimately, it was Pope Blessed Urban II [c. 1035-July 29, 1099] who sent the Crusaders. He was born Otho de Lagery in Italy. He became Pope on March 12, 1088. Seven years later, he met with an ambassador from Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos [1048-August 15, 1118]. The ambassador relayed an urgent request for help against the followers of Islam in Turkey. Muslims successfully had challenged Byzantine Christian control over the Anatolian region of Turkey.

Eight months later, on November 27, 1095, the Pope called for attendees of the Council of Clermont to counter Islam's control over the Holy Land and the growing Muslim challenge to Christendom. His call launched the First Crusade. The Crusade officially began on August 15, 1096. It officially ended with the Battle of Ascalon, on August 12, 1099.
