I certainly hope so! -I have Christian friends who are perspicacious enough to be invited to Jewish friends' homes to celebrate the "Festival of Lights". I am one. I am blessed by this "acceptance". Christianity has its roots in Judaism, whether its followers recognize that or not.

Jewish AnswerFrom the perspective of Judaism, it is not okay for Jews to celebrate both Channukah and Christmas. The main reason is that the core of the celebration of Channukah is the successful fight against forced assimilation of Jews by pagans. If a Jew were to celebrate both holidays, they would be doing the exact thing that Channukah stands against: assimilation.

There is nothing special about "Hanukkah before Christmas". But both holidays have their unique special qualities.

What do Jewish children celebrate instead of Christmas?

Jews don't celebrate anything instead of Christmas. This is because Jesus plays no role whatsoever in Judaism, therefore there is no Jewish holiday to celebrate him. Some people mistakenly believe that Channukah is the "Jewish Christmas", however, this couldn't be further from the truth. Channukah celebrates the rejection of forced assimilation, celebrating Christmas would directly violate the meaning of Channukah.

What are similarities between Christmas and Hanukkah?

Any similarity would be the result of Christmas influencing Hanukkah. Because Christmas is such a big holiday, certain practices were borrowed by some Jews to celebrate Hanukkah, such as gift-giving and some decorating. But the traditional practice of Hanukkah has nothing in common with Christmas. It should be noted that Hanukkah as it is observed by Orthodox Jews is not influenced by Christmas at all.

Why do people not celebrate Hanukkah?

"Instead" implies that one thing is replacing another or that the two are corollaries of one-another. This is not the case. Jews celebrate Hanukkah contemporaneously with Christmas, but these holidays are different in celebration, meaning, and purpose. They have nothing in common other than that they are both in December.Religious Jews ignore Christmas; it is simply not something of any importance to them in much the same way that Christians ignore Hanukkah, Eid al-Adha, or Diwali (which are Jewish, Islamic, and Hindu holidays) because they are not relevant to their tradition. Jews hold that their savior is not yet born, so it would be improper to celebrate the birth of a false Messianic Candidate.

How are Christmas and Easter alike?

Do you get gifts if you celebrate hanukkah?

Gift-giving during Hanukkah is a US invention performed by Liberal Jewish parents who saw that Jews felt left out of the Christmas gift-giving spirit. It has nothing to do with the proper celebration of Hanukkah. However, if you are a Liberal Jew in the US, you will likely receive gifts because this new tradition is pervasive.

What symbol can be used for both Christmas and Hanukkah?

There isn't one. The holidays are entirely different. The closest you could come is a candle, but a single candle does not represent Hanukkah. You can't use a star either, because a star has nothing to do with Hanukkah.
