When the early Christian church first took the Winter Solstice festival from the pagan traditions (a ploy to get converts) and grafted their "Jesus" story onto existing mythology, they kept many of the pagan traditions.
Giving gifts was originally a Roman tradition of Saturnalia. Pagan traditions are also why we decorate trees, use evergreen, holly, and mistletoe, feast, sing songs, and decorate with lights during the season.
