How can baby doves survive if the mother or father is rarely in the nest day or night?

if a mother or father bird does not sit on their eggs, then the eggs will have no chance of survival.

The eggs were hatched, but apparently one of the parents met up with a predator so only one raised the two babies. They were left alone all night in our near freezing temperatures.

When they left the nest they were so malnourished that they could barely flap their wings. We found one of them sprawled out on one of our bushes. My husband set it on the ground and the parent dove moved it to what he thought was a save place. Unfortunately, a cat jumped in and grabbed it before I could do anything. It was a sad day!!
