The UK uses the first-past-the-post system for parliamentary elections. The biggest disadvantage of this system is that it is possible for a party that gets way below 50% of the votes to end up with a massive majority in the House of Commons. For example, at the last general election (in 2005) Blair got 36% of the popular vote and ended up with an overall majority of over 60 seats. In fact, the last general election at which the government actually got 50% of the popular vote was in 1935. As far as I'm concerned the system is an insult to the electors.
