If you are a cashier and you discover before the customer is off the premises that they were short changed, you make every effort to correct the mistake by catching up to the customer and giving them the rest of their change. If the customer is already off the premises, leave the rest of their change in the register. If they return during your shift, give them the rest of their change. If a customer leaves the building and you do not realize they have been shortchanged, then they return saying they did not receive the correct change, the best course of action is to politely allow a manager to handle the situation. Sometimes, if the person is a regular customer, they will simply allow you to finish your shift, count your drawer at the end, and hold the money for them if your drawer is over. If the person is not a regular customer, they may insist that they receive the amount they believe they were short changed then and there. In any event, it should be the manager's decision as to how to handle the situation, especially since the person saying they were short changed after leaving the building might be mistaken.
