It began the Prohibition era, which basically banned all sale, transport, and consumption of alcohol (except for religious purposes). It was ratified on 16 January, 1919. It was repealed on 5 December, 1933 by the 21st Amendment because of extreme increases in organized crime due to rum-running, and underground bars.

The 18th Amendment to the US Constitution prohibited

  • the manufacture, sale and transportation within the United States
  • the imortation into the United States
  • the exportation out of the United States or certain territories

of intoxicating liquors intended to be used as beverages. This amendment introduced the era of "Prohibition" since Alcoholic Beverages were prohibited. The federal statue called the Volstead Act set forth the various ways and means for carrying out this prohibition

Ironically, the amendment did not ban the drinking of alcoholic beverages, which was what the promoters of the amendment actually wanted to do.

Nothing. The 18th amendment is repealed, meaning it no longer applies. This is according to the 21st amendment.
