PROTECTION! believe it or not if the babies are in danger or she thinks they are she will eat them .. of course there's other reasons too but i think this one is the main reason.
Why a Female Rabbit Would Kill Her Young.Well, when a female rabbit kills her young, it normally means she's been scared by something, or someone, and she believe the only way to protect them is to kill them herself, so they may not be eaten by anything else. When a rabbit has just had babies, the only thing you should do for them, is provide them with plenty of hay, change their water once every three days, and give them food everyday, and provide more food then you normally would.
You have to be very careful when doing this, because if you were to scare her, it could lead to her killing her young. :( So, slow moves, and don't get too close.
Female rabbits will kill their young for a variety of reasons. If feed has been restricted before and after the birth they can kill the babies as they will not have enough reserves to nurse the babies adequately. First time mothers ocassionally kill the young because they do not understand what the wiggling young are. If a doe is nervous or disturbed during the birth process she will occasionally kill the young as well. The repeated killing of babies by a given mother should result in the culling of that mother or the choice of the breeder to not breed that doe again. Does do not kill babies because of 'strange scents' in the nest box. Rabbits are actually fairly poor mothers and do not let scent disturb them. If does do not provide adequate fur in the nest box it is common for breeders to take fur from another nest or from what is left from grooming different rabbits and line the nest box with that fur. You will get all sorts of strange scents in a nest box if you do that and it will not affect the ability of the rabbit to be a mother. We are rabbit breeders and handle the young from the moment we are aware of their arrival. We have never had a problem with a doe killing the young or not wanting to feed and care for the young because of the scent of our hands on the young.
Rabbits will kill babies for a lot of complex and simple reasons. You need to check out your husbandry practices and the background of your doe to help determine the answer.
they will only kill there young if you touch the babies, touch the mum or if you put another rabbit with them.
This is not true they will not kill them if you touch them, i have at least 4 sets of babies right now that i handle every day. and one of the does is fostering another set of babies because one of the does milk dried up. it depends on the rabbit. so the story about you putting another rabbit in with them is not right. unless you mean a full grown rabbit in that case yes they might because they dont know if the new bunny will do their babies harm or not.
Yes, I have heard that female rabbits kill their babies because they have an unfamiliar scent on them. But, i Can prove this wrong i touch my baby bunnies as soon as they are born and the litter grows up healthy. I have also had my doe eat half a bunny but i think she did it because she is lacking something. i hope i helped you.
usually the mom would just be nervous if its a first time mom. It happens to a lot of rabbits but its completely normal. if it was a wild rabbit it would try to kill the baby so then nothing else would eat it but if the rabbit is domesticated then its OK to touch the babies because the rabbit is used to our sent. if the mom rejects the babies you can feed them cow milk or goat milk (better) NOT ANY OTHER MILK!
I would bet you $100.00 dollars that you have placed the nest box in your bunny's potty corner. Either that or your bedding is fouled by mice or rats. Try putting the box in a different corner and get fresh bedding next time you breed her. Do not put the nest box in until her 27th day and watch her closely to see that she is not using it for a potty. If she was doing it and not pregnant (no babies ) I would say that she is doing it because she doesn't know what it is for but since she has babies my money is on the potty corner.
No, She will not kill her babies, but you have to make sure that the other rabbits do not trample on her nest. The does are usually jealous of another doe having babies. Be very carefull that the nest is protected that only the mother has the access to it.
Mother Rabbits care for their babies by burrowing them to keep them warm and giving them milk once a day.
Not that i know of. we had several baby rabbits after saving the mother cottontail from our dog and when they roamed around with other older rabbits, they didnt harm the babies at all.
rabbits usually irritate when human lock them into the cage or kill their babies
When a mother first has a litter she will not know how to take care of the babies and will most likely eat them.. it is best to remove the male rabbit from the pen when a female is about to have babies or he will most likely kill them and prevent the mother from focusing on her young
Only if you ever touch the babies or offend the mother.
Babies were drowned at birth. For some reason the Germans decided that it was wrong to kill an expectant mother, but as soon as the mother had given birth it was alright to kill them both.
Mother rabbits may chase and bite their babies as a way to discipline them or establish dominance. This behavior is a way for the mother to teach her babies boundaries and ensure they respect her authority. It is also a way for her to protect them from potential threats in their environment.
It is rare but they can do if there is a lack of food or water. Stress and cramped conditions can also be a factor. It might be safer to remove the male from the environment until the babies are bigger.
leave the babies were they are but after 24 hours just pet stroke the mother rabbit and get her scent on you so wen u pick the baby rabbits up it wont cause stress for the mother or babies. don't move the baby rabbits to far because rabbits are not perfect mothers especially if its there first time just move them a bit so they have a bit of space and they are not jammed together.
No! The babies will be semi-wild, but still sweet! Wild rabbits do it! Don't kill the rabbit!
Mother rabbits are very gentle and careful when they jump in and out of the nest box they have to get in to nurse the babies, however, if someone or something frightens them they could jump on and squash their babies. A snake in the area will cause a rabbit to jump in and out erratically and they could kill all the babies unknowingly.
