"Charley horses," or muscle spasms, are cramps that occur mainly in the calf of the leg. They have many causes, some being dehydration, overuse or potassium/calcium deficiency (either of which when deficient cause your muscles to stop contracting properly).

The only real effects of these are painful cramps, sometimes described as knots, in the muscle where the spasm is occurring. This pain can be alleviated with proper stretching, and are worsened by flexing/tightening the pained muscle. They are prevented by avoiding the causes listed above.
